About the Item

This is a well rendered period view of the Blane Forge and Crafts House in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. It is currently known as the James Anderson House and Blacksmith Shop on Duke of Gloucester Street. It was originally built ca 1770 and restored in 1940. Artist Henry Fritz likely visited the area sometime after World War II to document the building and scene. Fritz chose a soft color palette and added figures in period clothing to the scene, often seen in Williamsburg, a working historical village. The Conestoga wagon is an added element that enhances the historic nature of the composition. Henry Eugene Fritz was born in Germany in 1875. He studied architecture and art at Catholic University, the National Academy, the Ecole Beaux Arts and Columbia University.. Fritz and painted extensively around the continent and throughout the eastern portion of the United States. Often his focus was historic buildings in their setting and this painting fits that description. Fritz moved to Merion, Pa and Chestertown, MD in his later years, passing in 1956. The oil on board measures 10” x 14” and is in very good condition. It is signed lower right and noted in Fritz’s pencil on reverse. The gold wood frame adds width and dimension to the work and measures 14 3/4” x 18 3/4” overall.

  • Lovely Antique European Cathedral Garden Oil Painting, Unsigned, ca 1920

    Although seemingly unsigned, this European Cathedral setting was painted by a well-trained artist. It dates to around 1920, about one hundred years ago. The summer scene is a back garden to a large cathedral and probably in Italy. Often, European churches and cathedrals have contemplative gardens that are off to the side or behind the grand edifices that are usually busy with people. This seems to be the case in this painting. A single statue with a backdrop of cypress trees provides a calm respite along a winding path to the historic church beyond. The artist chose this space to paint a reflective scene while still showing off some of the grandeur of the church and likely cathedral beyond. The Renaissance or Baroque buildings are very nicely rendered in a somewhat Impressionist manner. The overall composition with its vertical format is quite unique and alluring. It could certainly remind the viewer of similar scenes that were witnessed on past trips to Europe. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 12 1/2” x 18”. It has a wood gold frame with simple architectural lines that seem to frame it nicely, without being fancy or overbearing. Overall framed dimensions are 16” x 21 1/2”. The painting is in very good condition with no apparent repairs or damage. There is a small vertical mark below the statue, but that isn’t too noticeable, as is the vague vertical streak in the bottom lower right on the paint surface. That may be a thin varnish drip from years ago. The frame is generally in good condition with very minor discolorations in a few spots.
